Search Engine Optimization

Search engine optimization is constructing a web site so that a  search that may return millions of results has your page in the first ten results. Since most searchers will not look past the first ten results, its important to be in the first ten. Search engine optimization is your chance to be in the top ten.

Select Target Keywords or Phrases

The first step in search engine optimization is to ask what word or words will people use find pages on your site - for example, a site devoted to  religious music? Your ambition is that anytime someone searches for  "religious music" you want your page to be in the top ten results. Then "religious music" is  your target keyword phrase for that page.

Let's also imagine that you also have pages devoted specifically to gospel music, spirituals, jewish music, islamic music and buddhist music. Each of these pages will have different target keywords that reflect that page's content.

Finding Keywords

Various web sites such as Google's Adwords site  and Overture are a good way to get started.

Position Your Keywords

Place keywords prominently on your web pages. The page's title tag is most important and often missed. Each page's title should be short, descriptive and keyword-focused. Repeat the title in your page headline and, if possible, have the keywords appear in the first few paragraphs of your web page.

Spiders will usually only take the first 200-300 words on a page. Use CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) to make sure your keyword-containing text is first in the actual HTML file. Otherwise, the spider may give up before it gets to it.

Have Relevant Text

Spiders can't see pictures and may not see pages that are dynamically generated. Be safe. If at all possible, make your pages HTML. Include links on your pages to other relevant pages on your web site. Don't be afraid to link to an outside site if you think it will help your visitors.

Ask Other Sites To Link To You

Every major search engine uses link analysis as part of their ranking algorithms.  Get links from good web pages that are related to your topics.

How Do I Find Links?

Go to a search engine and search for your keywords. Visit the sites and verify that they have relevant content. Write (email) the site owner or webmaster and and ask them to link to you.

Add More Content

Don't stop after you have created the obvious pages. A site dedicated to religious music might also include pages on the history of music, musical theory, biographies of important religious songwriters and musicians and the care and maintenance of musical instruments! Each page  broadens your site's visibility, increases the number of visitors and raises the likelihood that the visitor will find what they are looking for on your site. Good Luck!
